The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Fair Information Practice (FIP) principles are a set of "reports, guidelines, and model codes that represent widely-accepted principles concerning fair information practices". The practices include (1) Notice/Awareness; (2) Choice/Consent; (3) Access/Participation; (4) Integrity/Security; and (5) Enforcement/Redress. Under the rights of access and participation, one technically has the right to access and review any records about oneself for completeness and accuracy.

As an experiment, I am going to attempt to gain access to the records of a notorious information aggregator. I want to find out if there is a mechnism for reviewing and correcting any of the billions of records this firm holds. If I am successful, this may prove that the present system for protecting consumers works. If this does not work, I will (FWIW) draft a guide for changes in the enforcement of FIP.
